Reads from South Africa

I picked up some books (way too many and I had to carry them home) during my travels in South Africa and Botswana. I was there to do academic research in several archives, and along the way, I spent time in several bookstores. Here are my thoughts on some of these books, now that I've... Continue Reading →

Where Mandela Walked

“All my life, I have fought against white domination and black domination, and cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society. It is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.” —Nelson Mandela, 20 April 1964 Today I visited the prison where Mandela was held until 1990. We were led in a tour... Continue Reading →

Traveling with Books

I’m headed to South Africa and Botswana in a week, and while I’ve been packing for this three-week-long research trip, I’m realizing that my biggest worry is what I will bring with me to read! I don’t like e-books, so I am planning to bring actual physical copies of books, but I also have to... Continue Reading →

Purple Thomas Hardys from Wales

I am jet lagged from a fantastic trip to the United Kingdom last week, but I have just enough energy to start sharing my book purchases while there. (I can’t believe I carried so many books home!) I had half of my suitcase full of books and an empty duffle bag filled up by the... Continue Reading →

Meet Me in Nova Scotia

After visiting Prince Edward Island in August, I attended an academic conference in Halifax, Nova Scotia. On the drive there, I stopped in Truro to meet somebody special: Naomi my blogging friend from Consumed by Ink! I met her outside of the library, a gorgeous building in the heart of Truro where the old brick... Continue Reading →

Anne of Green Gables

Anne of Green Gables: she's not real, but she's beloved. I can't count how many times I have watched the Anne of Green Gables miniseries, and my husband and I recently enjoyed the new series on Netflix "Anne with an E" with our oldest daughter. Have I read Anne of Green Gables? Yes, but I... Continue Reading →

What I Bought

My last post gushed over visiting Powell's City of Books in Portland, Oregon. Today's post is a report of what I bought while there.   I also purchased a few books at the CCCC conference. Happy reading!

City of Books

I am visiting Portland, Oregon, this week for an academic conference and to receive an award for my dissertation (yay!). Yesterday, I visited Powell's City of Books. It is amazing. It was my first time there! I can't believe I haven't been there before. Here are some scenes from this amazing 68,000 square foot bookstore.

Falles of Valencia, Spain

In early April, I visited Valencia, Spain, for an academic conference. I spent a few days there and had time to do a little sightseeing. I haven't yet posted about it, and I wanted to share with you the falles, and the museum that houses the best one from each year, since the early 1900s.... Continue Reading →

Taj Mahal

On the last day of our trip, we made it to the Taj Mahal. It was breathtaking, and we arrived at 6 a.m. in order to see the gorgeous stone of the building be lighted by the rising sun. Sunrise and sunset are the best times to see the building, as it changes colors and... Continue Reading →
