A few weeks ago, I posted about Pulitzer Prize winners. The post received attention from Lana Cole at https://colecampfireblog.com, who has decided to read all of the Newbery winners. It looks like I’ve read 22 of them. I recognize many of the titles from my childhood, even those I haven’t read yet, and some of them I’ve read in the past five years with my children. I want to read more!
How many have you read?
I have a collection of a lot of Newbery honors and winners. I’ve read a lot of early ones. That Mankind book is huge and complex. I’d like to see a kid read it! Hitty and Gaylord and the Coatsworth cat books are great.
Interesting that one of them maybe isn’t for kids!
Maybe kids in the 1920s, but not today’s kids!
I have read 13. I will add these to my ever growing list of books.
The TBR list never gets any shorter, does it! 🙂
I’ve read quite a few, but so many more of them I would like to read! As usual… 🙂
🙂
I’ve only read one! Basil E Frankweiler.
That is a really good one, though!
I have read Johnny Tremain, King of the Wind, The Witch of Blackbird Pond, The Bronze Bow, A Wrinkle in Time, Bridge to Terabithia, and Sarah, Plain and Tall.
That’s a great list of them.
Great post and thank you for the mention Emily! Currently I have read about 40 of them.. the latest was over the weekend, I finished up Flora & Ulysses! 💗 Happy Reading!😊
You’re welcome, Lana! You are doing such a fun reading project.
I absolutely adore Flora & Ulysses!
It was definitely a fun one! I’m glad you enjoyed it too! I just finished up The Tale of Despereaux. It was cute!
Love this!
🙂
I’ve read a few of them, mostly when I was younger, but I did not realize how old some of these books are! Ginger Pye was one of my favorites growing up but I had no idea it was written in the 50s!
They are classics!
Good heavens! I saw a copy of The Witch of Blackbird Pond (1959) on a visit to the American Writers Museum and my heart lurched! I can’t remember what the story was about but I remember reading it as a kid in Detroit in the early 1970s and having that revelatory “books can do this?!” feeling.
I love this story, Leslie! That sums up the power of books right there. And The Witch of Blackbird Pond is about witches in early New England. I only know that because I reread it a few years ago with my daughter and got to review the plot.
Not. A. Single. One.
Oh, this makes me sad. Try some!
I know. But then, to my credit, I had never heard of the Newbery award. I read tons of stuff, but I don’t associate much with bibliophiles, so I am not up on such matters :).
Well, in that case, I forgive you. 😉 I hope you try a few of them!
I lost count at about 22 or 23. And many of them are favorites from childhood. A good list to keep on hand. Thanks for posting it.
You’re welcome. It sounds like you’ve read a lot of them so far.
I hadn’t heard of the Newbery Award and needed to consult ‘google’. But it looks impressive.
I’m glad we have Google! I like reading to my kids, so having a list of the best chapter books for children handy is always good thing for me.
